Eugene Richards
Photographing People
June 7-12
"This workshop is for advanced students,
professional photographers and serious amateurs seeking
to become more proficient photographing people. I will
begin by showing and discussing the work and methods
of major journalistic and art photographers, then share
pieces of my own photographic and film work. I will
discuss and individually critique your photographs,
ways of seeing, and the content of your images. There
will be pertinent assignments. You will learn how to
approach people, how to feel more comfortable entering
various social situations with a camera, and how to
focus your efforts so that you may create stronger,
more meaningful images. We will also examine the ethics,
rights, and restraints of working as a photographer,
the research and editing processes, and, as time permits,
ways to prepare your work for exhibition and publication."
Eugene Richards is an editorial photographer,
teacher, filmmaker and the author of thirteen books.
These include "Orchestra Days", "Exploding
Into Life", "Cocaine True", "Cocaine
Blue", and "Stepping Through the Ashes".
Most recent was "The Fat Baby", a book of
photographic and textual essays from the last twelve
years. Richards has completed assignments for Life,
the New York Times Magazine, National Geographic
and Time; he has received a Guggenheim
Fellowship, the W. Eugene Smith Award, and the Robert
F. Kennedy Lifetime Achievement Journalism Award.
